Pilots are broadly categorized into three types. (1) Commercial Pilots (2) Military Pilots (3) Pilots in Space (Astronaut).

Commercial Pilots: If you wish to become a Commercial Pilot, you need to undergo immense training as the commercial pilots are responsible for the safety of passengers and also carry mails or goods from one destination to another. To take up Commercial Pilot job you need to get Commercial Pilot's Licence which is issued by Director General Civil Aviation (DGCA). Before getting CPL, you need to get Student Pilot Licence which allows you to get training.

Certified Flight Instructor / Flight Instructor: The aspiring pilots will get training from this Flight Instructor at SPL or PPL level. Instructor licence is required to start a career as Flight Instructor and it can be obtained after getting Commercial Pilot Licence. The flight instructor job is to teach others to fly, for that you will be paid.

Helicopter Pilot: If you want to become a Helicopter Pilot, you need the same set of skills required as that of aircraft pilot. Forty hours of flying training is required to obtain Private Helicopter Pilot Licence. Also you need to clear a written test.

Agricultural Pilot: To gear up a career as Agricultural Pilot, you need to have excellent flying skills, where the Agricultural Pilot job demands the pilots to carry chemicals and compounds for fields and farmlands. So you need to have the awareness of farming techniques. To become an Agricultural Pilot you need to obtain Commercial Pilot Licence.

Charter or Corporate Pilots: Large Corporate houses have their own aircraft. They used to hire the service of pilots for their business purpose. So as a Charter or Corporate Pilots you need to take up the flying assignment from them for which you will be paid per hour or it depends upon the aggrement terms. To become Corporate Pilots or Charter Pilots you need to have Commercial Pilot Licence.

Military Pilot: If you have a passion to save the nation by flying, fighting and winning then you can take up Military Pilot Career. To become a Military Pilot, you can join Indian Air Force or flying wing of Indian Army or Navy. The age eligibility to join Military Pilot is 16-17 years and qualification is 10+2 or equivalent with English, Physics and Mathematics.

How to become a Pilot?

Being a pilot is not an easy joke. Apart from the skills mentioned above, the pilot job requires lot of training. The first step in training is to get Student Pilot Licence (SPL), which is the initial stage for you to learn. Upon completion of your training, you will be provided with Private Pilot Licence (PPL) where you can captain an aircraft without passengers. Then after training and experience you need to qualify for Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL). This licence will be issued by Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) which allows you to fly an aircraft with passengers. But the CPL endorses you what aircraft you can fly. After getting Commercial Pilot Licence, as per your specialization, you can join an airlines as co-pilot. After which upon seniority and experience, you can move on further positions in Pilot. On the other hand if you wish to change to another type of aircraft or specialization, again you need to undergo various training levels.


What is the salary of Pilots in India?


The starting salary for pilots might be less because of fewer flying hours, the salary will be approximately Rs.40,000 to Rs.50,000, but in a short span of time when you promote as co-pilot and to captain post, you can get salary in the range of Rs.1.5 lakhs to 3.5 lakhs per month, but again it depends upon the specialization and upon the airlines with which you are working.

The amount you require for a flying school course and for training to become a Pilot depends upon the specialization you take and remember it's a rich man's game, you might need to spend approximately Rs.50 lakhs to one crore.
